Generally speaking, there are 3 ways to level up your unit: kill enemies, use EXP Recorder and offline training. When your unit reach certain levels, it can get evolutions.

Each unit can get 4 evolutions totally. Everytime when the unit reaches level 20, level 60, level 100 and level 130, you can find the Evolution officers to evolve your unit.
Talk to the Evolution officer, your unit will be evolved automatically.
After unit evolution, your unit's attributes will be greatly improved.
